Key Goes Green
"Paper and paper products account for more than 1/3 of all Canada’s waste." (Environment Canada)
Our goal is not just to pay lip service to taking care of our environment, but to adopt initiatives that really do just that. For instance, our recycling program doesn't involve shipping paper waste overseas for storage and eventual processing, but rather, our paper is recycled into new products right here in North America.
'REDUCE' is the first and most important of the THREE R's: REDUCE, RE-USE, RECYCLE. We will track how much less paper we use and translate that into the number of trees preserved.
Currently at Key, we estimate that we use approximately 25 000 sheets of paper per month at each of the larger branches. We aim to reduce our paper use by 25% over the course of a year. To do so, we strive to cut each month's paper consumption back by 25%. This will take much effort on behalf of everyone, and if successful, we can save 75 000 sheets of paper annually and many trees!
In addition to being conscious about paper consumption, we have also enforced great recycling habits in the office. For example, we have beverage recycling bins and each employee has their own paper recycling bin. In our Shipping and Receiving Department, we have assigned bins for both plastic and cardboard. Packaging can be quite excessive and it is known to make up a third or more of North Americans' trash (The Recycler's Handbook, 1990).
